Master Key System Design: before you call

A dental office wants the front desk to lock up at night without ever holding a key to the room where patient records and controlled supplies are stored.

From lockouts to master keys.

A dental office wants the front desk to lock up at night without ever holding a key to the room where patient records and controlled supplies are stored. Right now one master key opens both, which nobody is comfortable with once it is pointed out.

Worth answering before the call

Are new departments, hires or locations expected in the near future? Do any existing keys already open more than one door? Do any doors need restricted or patented keys for duplication control?

How do you decide how many sub-master levels a business actually needs?

The number follows the organization, not a preference for tidy diagrams. Genuinely distinct groups, such as separate departments or floors with different access needs, each justify a level; access differences that exist only on paper usually do not. A hierarchy with more levels than the business uses in practice is harder to administer without making anyone's day-to-day access meaningfully better.

Can cleaners or contractors get limited access without a master key?

Yes. A change key or a narrow sub-master covering only the areas they service is the usual approach, rather than handing over a level that reaches further than the job requires. Where the property uses keypad or card access alongside mechanical keys, a time-limited or role-specific electronic credential can serve the same purpose without a physical key changing hands at all.
