Locked out
Safely, right now
- Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
- Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
- Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.
Key broke in the lock
Safely, right now
- Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
- Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.
Lock won't turn
Safely, right now
- Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
- Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.
Lost keys
Safely, right now
- Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
- Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.
Lock work makes brass shavings, sawdust and small screws that roll under furniture. We put a drop sheet down, catch the mess, and vacuum before we go. Homeowners in The Beaches should be able to tell we were there only by the way the door now locks, not by anything left behind.

The fix, explained · The Beaches
What is the door doing?
EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.
The fix
Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware.
EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceMinus eighteen with a wind, and the exterior cylinder on the shop door has frozen solid overnight after yesterday's slush.
The fix
Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door. An owner shows identification and something connecting them to the premises, such as the lease or the business registration.
EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionOvernight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway.
The fix
Two facts shape the job before the locksmith arrives: whether the door is locked or unlocked, and whether any of the key is showing. A fragment that protrudes can often be gripped and drawn straight out.
EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThey did not get in.
The fix
There are really two jobs inside one call. The first is tonight: make the door close and lock so the household can sleep.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe old mortise lock on the front door of the house turns the key halfway and stops with a dull clunk.
The fix
Many jammed locks are not lock problems at all. Wood doors swell in humid weather and shrink in dry winter air, hinges loosen and let the door drop, and a strike plate that was fine in spring is a few millimetres out by autumn.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.
The fix
A key ring rarely holds only house keys, so a same-visit rekey looks at everything that was on it. The mechanical house keys are handled by repinning the cylinders.

What the census means at the door
58%
Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.

Households in The Beaches often collect locks from different decades that all take different keys. We rekey them to a single key where the hardware allows, replace the one or two that cannot be matched, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible. You leave with a lighter ring and a clear idea of which key does what.

Your right to be there, confirmed. For lockouts and key cutting we check identification or another proof. It is a courtesy to you and to whoever else holds a key.
Options for now and later. Sometimes the sensible move is a small fix now and a planned upgrade later. We tell you which parts are urgent and which can wait.
A clean door and clear notes. We leave the area tidy and give you a short written account of what was done and how many keys were cut.

Which fix fits?
IfYou can see your keys through the window, sitting on the kitchen table.
ThenA non-destructive opening.
Once we confirm you live here, most doors can be picked open with no damage and your key keeps working.
IfThe keys are gone and you have no idea where.
ThenOpen the door, then rekey the locks.
Getting in is only half the job; new pins mean whoever finds the old set has nothing that fits.
IfThe key snapped and half of it is still in the lock.
ThenExtraction, then a fresh key cut from code.
The right tool draws the broken piece out without damaging the pins, so the cylinder usually stays.
IfThe heavy glass door has been scraping the threshold for weeks.
Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door.
Curious about the process?
My lock is a high-security model. Can it still be opened?
Yes. High-security cylinders with security pins, sidebars or restricted keyways are designed to slow an intruder, and they do slow a locksmith too, but they open with the right technique, a decoder made for that keyway, or as a last resort a precise drill through the cylinder followed by a like-for-like replacement. Bring any key card or code card that came with the lock, since restricted keys are cut from those records rather than copied.
Our door uses fobs and the reader is dead. Can you get us in?
Yes, and usually without disturbing the access system. Many readers and electric strikes go dark because a power supply, breaker or backup battery has failed, and restoring power reopens the door. Where a mechanical override cylinder is fitted, it opens like any other lock; not every system includes one. An ordinary magnetic lock releases on its own once its power is actually removed, so a genuine power loss opens that door without waiting on a remote release. Afterwards, credentials and schedules are confirmed with whoever manages the system.
Can all my doors be made to work with one key?
Usually, yes. Where the cylinders accept the same style of key blank, each can be pinned to one new combination, so a single key runs the front, back, side and garage doors. A lock from a different keyway family is brought into the group by exchanging its cylinder for a compatible one in the same finish. During the first walk around the property the locksmith reads every keyway and tells you up front which doors can be keyed alike.
How do I prepare the room before a servicing visit?
Clearing a working space in front of the safe, moving anything stacked against or on top of it, and having a rough idea of when it was last serviced all help the visit start smoothly. If the combination or code is still known, having it on hand avoids needing to open the unit by other means first. Nothing more elaborate than that is generally needed beforehand.
