In plain words

Winter creates its own kind of lockout. Meltwater runs into a keyway during the day and freezes overnight, a weather-exposed cylinder stiffens in the cold, and a door that shrank in January may drop its bolt out of line with the strike. A home lockout visit in these conditions is as much about the door as the lock: the locksmith thaws and frees the cylinder without forcing it, checks whether the bolt or the frame is the real obstacle, and opens the door in a way that leaves the hardware sound. A little dry lubricant and a tube of de-icer usually finish the job.

Sound familiar?

You reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there. It was on the ring this morning. Now the door is locked, the lights are off, and nothing you have on you opens it.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Checking a smart or keypad lock before opening it

Electronic locks get their own set of questions. Is the keypad completely dead or just refusing the code? Are there battery contacts on the outside that accept a nine-volt battery for a temporary boost? Is there a mechanical override cylinder behind a cover, and does anyone hold the key for it? Is the lock paired to an app that could unlock it from a phone, and has the phone been factory reset lately? These checks decide whether the door can be opened by simply restoring power, by using the override cylinder, or by treating it like any other lock. It also tells the locksmith what to reset once you are inside.

  2. 2

When drilling is the right answer

Occasionally a cylinder is seized, badly worn, packed with a broken key or built to resist picking to a degree that makes it impractical. In that case the locksmith explains, before starting, that the cylinder will be sacrificed and replaced. The drilling is aimed precisely at the shear line so the plug can turn, which keeps the damage to the cylinder alone and leaves the door, the trim and the bolt untouched. A new cylinder or complete deadbolt is fitted in the same visit, new keys are cut and tested, and the old hardware is handed to you or taken away as you prefer. You leave with a working, lockable door, not a temporary patch.

  3. 3

    Looking after the cylinder afterwards

A lock that has just been opened deserves a little care so it keeps turning sweetly. Twice a year, follow your lock's own maintenance guidance: many residential cylinders take a puff of dry graphite or PTFE lubricant into the keyway, some a specified liquid product instead; general-purpose oil sprays attract dust and gum the pins. Wipe grit off your keys before using them, and retire a key that has worn thin or bent, cutting a new one from the code or from a crisp original rather than from a tired copy. If the key starts to need a wiggle to turn, that is the cylinder asking for attention early, while it is still an easy fix rather than a lockout.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Whether the key is inside or lost

If the key is inside, the visit ends when the door opens. If it was lost out in the world, rekeying and fresh keys usually follow, and that is separate work priced on its own.

  2. 2

    Electronic lock work

A dead smart lock may need batteries, a reset, reprogramming of codes or pairing to your phone once the door is open. Each of those is a small task that the quote names separately.

  3. 3

Any upgrade you choose while the locksmith is there

Some people use the visit to move to a heavier deadbolt, a reinforced strike, a keypad or a lockbox. None of it is required to get you inside; each option is priced as a separate line.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Home Lockout Service: questions

Advice · (289) 806-4961

My key snapped off in the lock. Is that still a lockout call?

It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken blade is removed with extraction tools that grip it and draw it out, rather than pushing it deeper, and then the door is opened normally. A key rarely breaks in a healthy cylinder, so the locksmith checks the pins and springs afterwards and cleans or services the cylinder if wear caused it. A new key is cut from the two halves or from the code, since a weakened copy would snap again.

My lock is a high-security model. Can it still be opened?

Yes. High-security cylinders with security pins, sidebars or restricted keyways are designed to slow an intruder, and they do slow a locksmith too, but they open with the right technique, a decoder made for that keyway, or as a last resort a precise drill through the cylinder followed by a like-for-like replacement. Bring any key card or code card that came with the lock, since restricted keys are cut from those records rather than copied.

What happens if my identification is not convincing enough on the spot?

The work pauses rather than proceeds, and the locksmith helps you find another route: a neighbour or building manager who can confirm you live there, a document on your phone, a family member who can bring paperwork, or completing the check inside after entry when the documents are behind the door. Verification protects you as much as anyone, because the same standard applies to whoever might one day claim to live at your address.

What the census means at the door

58%

Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.

23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.
