High Security Locks in Crescent Town

The pharmacy stockroom, the server closet or the cash office is protected by the same ordinary cylinder as the staff washroom. One lost key on a lanyard would open all of them.

In plain words

For a business, high security locks are as much about paperwork as metal. A restricted or patented key system registers the premises with the locksmith, names who may order keys, and numbers every key cut. That is what turns a lost staff key from a mystery into a line in a log. The hardware backs it up: cylinders with sidebars and hardened inserts, heavy-duty deadbolts or mortise locks, and strikes set into the structure. Where several doors are involved the keys can be arranged so a manager carries one key and staff carry keys that open only their own areas.

Sound familiar?

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    What the door is protecting

The assessment starts with a question rather than a tape measure: what is behind this door, and what has made you think about it now? A front door on a family home, a stockroom with prescription drugs and a server closet in an office carry different risks and deserve different levels of hardware. The locksmith also asks who has keys today and how sure you are of that count. Those answers decide whether the right answer is a graded deadbolt with a controlled key, a laboratory-rated cylinder in a heavy lock body, or a small keyed system across several doors. Spending goes where the risk actually sits.

  2. 2

Retiring the old keys and closing gaps

Part of the visit is making the old keys meaningless. Once the new cylinders are in, every previous key is tried to confirm it no longer operates anything, and any remaining door on the old keyway is either upgraded or at least rekeyed so an unknown copy has nowhere to go. The locksmith also closes small gaps found during the assessment: replacing hinge screws with long ones, adjusting a closer, adding a cylinder guard, or moving a thumb-turn away from glass. The door leaves the visit as one coherent assembly rather than one strong part among weak ones.

  3. 3

    Ordering keys the right way

Extra keys are now a small procedure rather than an errand. An authorised person contacts the locksmith, the request is checked against the system record, and the key is cut from code so it works as cleanly as the first. New keys are numbered and added to the register. Businesses often issue keys against a signature and collect them when someone leaves, which the register makes simple. Homeowners typically keep two or three spare keys and hold onto the authorisation card. A key cut from a worn copy would not release the sidebar properly, which is one more reason the code route is the only route.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Hinge and door edge work

Long hinge screws, a hinge-side security stud or repair to a chewed door edge are small items that add up on a door that has been forced before.

  2. 2

    Key control level

A patented keyway with authorisation cards covers most homes. Geographically exclusive keyways and signature-controlled systems for businesses carry registration and administration that show in the quote.

  3. 3

    Retiring the old keyway

If other doors stay on the old key for now, they may need rekeying so an unknown copy has nowhere to go; that is additional cylinder work alongside the upgrade.

High Security Locks: questions

Advice · (289) 806-4961

What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?

The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks.

How long does the installation take?

A cylinder swap with new keys on one door is a short visit. A new deadbolt, reinforced strike and frame repair takes longer, and several doors keyed to a plan take longer again, mostly in bench time pinning cylinders. The locksmith gives you a realistic estimate once the doors have been looked at, because the frame condition and the door preparation matter more than the count of locks alone.

Will my door look different afterwards?

Barely. A high security cylinder sits in the same place as the old one and is usually distinguished only by a different keyway shape and sometimes a hardened collar. A graded deadbolt is a standard-looking deadbolt in your chosen finish. The reinforced strike is longer than the plate it replaces and the wrap-around reinforcer, if used, shows as a neat metal band on the door edge. The difference is felt when you lock up, not seen from the street.

What the census means at the door

58%

Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Old brass keys wear thin, and a key that has bent for years finally lets go in a cold cylinder. In older housing stock this is a regular call, so the locksmith is ready to extract the piece, check the cylinder and cut a new key from the code.

23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Condo boards commonly set rules about what may be changed on the outside face of a suite door. A locksmith experienced with attached housing knows to keep the visible hardware within those rules while still upgrading the cylinder and strike behind it.
